There is an obvious thing this site could do that would make it feel more useful, and it is the thing it is most important not to do.

ASSE states that the maximum safe water temperature, usually 120 degrees Fahrenheit, is mandated by the local code. That is repeated here and taken no further. No page picks a temperature for a household, publishes instructions for adjusting a limit stop, or tells anybody to raise one.

What we do say
That your valve has a limit stop. That ASSE says an installer is supposed to set it. That the maximum safe water temperature, usually 120 degrees Fahrenheit, is mandated by the local code. All three are published, checkable, and linked on the pages that state them.

What we do not say
What yours should be. Not because we are being coy, but because the binding answer is your local code and your valve’s own instructions, and a website that hands out a number invites somebody to use it instead of looking.
We also do not publish instructions for adjusting a limit stop, and we will not tell anybody to raise one. It caps a hazard; moving it up removes protection from everyone who uses that shower, including people who were not consulted.
And what we will not claim about any valve
That it makes scalding impossible. A compensating valve is a safety device that works within limits, and no product on the market removes the need for the stop to be set correctly in the first place.
Anybody selling one on that basis is overselling it.
The other two refusals

No verdict on repair versus replacement. It turns on the access, the parts and the tile, which are all in your house rather than on this page.
Why we say it
